sharing my experience….we got my sons diagnosis during last 4 months of kindergarten..then after diagnosis i was reluctant to give him medicines n try theropies..in this situation developmental paediatrician confused me by stoping psychiatrists medicine by diagnosing it as asd and not .adhd.actually his main issues were adhd.by the time i started his medicines it was the last month of kindergarten n so much curriculum y to cover.it wa sreally stressful on child n me too.all the things he has to learn stepwise was very difficult he couldnt learn in a last month.or whether it is academically behind i really dont know..though my child is socially not maturedas per his age the main reasono of repeating was the situation leading to stress and late decision ofst starting the medicine..

but it has helped me for sure as he developed some skills during the year of repetition .good luck.

brian, when yourson does his homwork?if 5 mg in the evening is enough for focus?my son is also 7 years old and having this issue of wearing{ takes methylphenidate) off the medicines.he takes 15 mg sustained release methylpheidate i n morning with 5 mg of aripiprazole{he throws the things and hits when he is not on aripiprazole),t before school then at 1.30 pm he takes his lunch and at 2 p,m, agaihyn 10 mg of methylphenidate sustained he takes release..in the afternoon 1.30 to 2.30 is time when rhe shows the signs of wearing off like yelling, not listening, getting angry over smaller things…then froo{totally different boy at different timings[m 2.30 to 6.30 pm he is okay and the homework is done at 3 p.m..after{ 6.360 p.m. to 8.30 pm wearing off time…so after 6.30 again he is very impulsive and hyper, doesnt listen to anything and with his friends lacks the co ordination… i too b want to cover up his wearinfg off timings ….basically it is in the afternoon and evening ..he.surprizingly after 8.30 pm he ia a quiet boyb n obediant too,i think because of aripiprazole he takes in the morning…any suggestion is always welcome…and sorry for the typing mistrakes actually my backspace and delete keys are not working…sorry again.

I have a 7 year old son, just want to know when these habbits like hitting, throwing, threatning, pushing i mean getting physical to other persons during meltdown goes off?? Even in general when things are not against his wish and medicines are wearing off he shows these acts but they are milder..He is currently on abiilify and methylphenidate.Because least i wish that anyone should get physically hurt by him by lack of impulse control. Thanks in advance for any help.

I repeated his kindergarten n it has proven to be fruitful decision. initially i wasnt ready at all but repeating a year was beneficial in many ways.Last month his both the teachers were asking how this miracle has happened?Reading, writing n eunderstanding skills improved within last three months…I guess its the TIME N PRACTICE playing a major part…

in my sons case too, this reward and consequences things are not of great help till now.He is not intrested in smilies and stickers at all,he says and actually behaves nicelly whenever he wants his tech things, but he doesnt want anything to come between good behaviour and reward…says its tooo boaring ,lets not play it.He is quite practical at 6 and half…
And about consequences ,if I Say you didnt give me the laptop back at the time we mutually decided, now no laptop tomorrow then he will say, ok then he also will not study that day.So on every consequence,he has his counter condition also.I WILL sure ask the the theropist about this next time?So ASJD you are not alone ..BUT I am sure you can find out your own tricks in between theropists advise and your childs behaviour…
Anyone here who hasthe similar experience like mine…

AND the other thing his developmental paediatrician suggested to take ABA theropy and stop Aripiprazole,,,But his psychiatrist had different opinion he told only ABA will not help he has to take aripiprazole. And one day when he bit me at two different places and to my elder 13 year old son also when we were trying to console him during his melt down over very unreasonable issue.MY elder son started crying, that was the end of my patience.I thought the sibling shouldnt be at least physically hurt .So I FOLLOWED his psychiatrists advise and he currently takes both the medicines..And finally in our house we are relatively in peace .

    hi Cquinlan,
Before a few months ago my six and half year old sons behaviour was same like your son…BUT AFTER starting ARIPIPRAZOLE IN very smaller dose along with methylphenidate xr …things are in much better control, though not totally.Though sometimes I WORRY why only single medicine doesnt work for him? But when i tried to stop ARIPIPRAZOLE the same old thing of biting ,kicking, hitting started at the time of wearing off methylphenidate….So here he is again with the combo of both the medicines.Maybe you can discuss this with his doctor..

FOR MY 6 year old son my psychiatrist has started abilif at night and metthylphenidate 10 mg sr twice a day .he thinks that abilif will reduce violent behaviour liike bitting, hitting in my son and will be okay socially…ABILIF ,i stopped it before some time after his developmental paediatricians advise ….but my son started violence and anger when methylphenidate wears off during afternoon and evening …I WAS suggesting instead of adding abilif ,could we overlap doses of methylphenidate?but the psychiatrist refused.so now my son is on abilif again…now during wearing off of methylphenidate anger and crying is still there but violence is decreased. but this is not desired effect i was expecting..i think i should ask him whether he can start methylphenidate and atomoxetine at different time of day to reduce aggressiveness. .

if anyone has experience having combination of both abilif and methylphenidate or methylphenidate and atomoxetine please share…THANK YOU.
